How To Compress A Video/Photo On iPhone

Modified on Mon, 15 Apr at 12:21 PM

Description of Problem

This article will guide you through how to compress a video or Photo by reducing the resolution. This will mean that the image may appear slightly burry but you should then be able to email or send the media to whoever you need to.

For the best result with videos, please ensure that the length of the video has been reduced as much as possible before compressing. This will ensure that we're not compressing any data that's simply not needed, and instead we're getting rid of it altogether.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. Download iMovie (If Not Already Downloaded)

Navigate to the App store on iPhone and download 'iMovie'. This is a free app developed by Apple and can be used for simple video editing and compression.

See below for how this should look in the App Store:

2. Compressing The Selected Media

Step 1: Start a New 'Movie' Project

Step 2: Select The Video To Compress and 'Create Movie'

Step 3: Select 'Done' and then Share the video

Share the Video:

Step 4: Export as Video and Compression Options

Select 'Options':

Step 5: Select The Below Compression Options

Step 6: Save the Video

Step 3: Final Steps

Now that the video/photo has been saved, you should be able to find it back in the 'Photos' app. The Video/Photo may look very similar to the source however this is normal, if you've done all the above steps then it will be compressed!.

Now, all you need to do is try re-emailing the video/photo and see if it's below the size limit. If you still hit the same issue, then compress the video further by lowering the resolution even more (For example, set it to 540p instead of 720p HD).
