Changing language options within Office

Modified on Wed, 9 Aug, 2023 at 12:23 PM

Description of Problem

This article will cover how to change Office apps such as Word and Powerpoint so that they accept the British English versions of words rather than just the American English.

This guide will cause Office Apps to accept both American and British spellings, not just British spellings. This is currently a limitation within Office and sadly you are unable to only have the British English spelling of a word accepted

TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. Solution

Step 1: Open an Office App such as Word

Select 'Options' highlighted in the very bottom left corner, as shown below

Step 2: Selecting the correct language pack

Select 'Language' and then select 'Add a Language'.

Do not worry if you have far more languages than shown below, this is simply the pool of languages that word will use for auto correct. For example, if you have French as a language here and you start typing any French word then Office will accept it instead of trying to get you to auto correct it to an English word.

Scroll until you find 'English (United Kingdom)' and then select 'Add'.

Step 3: Selecting the language as preferred and deleting the American Version

Select the United Kingdom version and click 'Set as Preferred'

The following box will appear, select 'yes'

Finally, remove the American English language by selecting the below

2. Other Notes

Please note that after this fix has been applied, you must restart all office applications in order for the changes to take affect
